How to recover a missing hard disk

Hard disk missing in Windows 11/10/8/7? Learn why it disappears from File Explorer or Disk Management and how to get it back without losing data.

When a hard disk disappears from a Windows computer, you can no longer open or access the data saved on it, which can lead to data loss, a shortage of storage space and other problems.

If your hard drive is still not recognized, the fault may be physical and every new attempt counts. Before trying again, see how hard drive recovery works, starting with a free diagnosis.

So what can you do if your hard disk has disappeared from your PC?

In this article, we explain some effective ways to fix the problem.

Como recuperar disco rígido que desapareceu

Why did my hard disk disappear in Windows 11/10/8/7?

Usually, this problem means that a partition is not listed in File Explorer, or that it shows up as unallocated space in Disk Management.

Keep in mind that the hard drive holds most of the data on your computer, including information that matters a lot to you.

So if the hard drive goes missing, you may lose access to all the data on it.

Why doesn’t the hard disk appear in Disk Management?

There are several reasons why a hard disk may not appear in Disk Management:

  • A faulty USB connection or cable;
  • The drive has no drive letter assigned;
  • The drive is hidden;
  • A Windows update or installation is pending;
  • The drive itself has failed (an electronic or mechanical fault).

How do I recover a missing hard disk?

When the hard disk doesn’t show up in Windows, start by connecting it to a different USB port to see if that helps.

You can also try connecting the hard disk to another computer to see if the problem persists. If the drive clicks, beeps or isn’t detected anywhere, stop there: it is probably a physical fault and needs a lab.

If none of this works, try one of the following methods to fix the missing hard disk.

Solutions for a hard disk that has disappeared from File Explorer

If you open File Explorer and can’t see a hard disk partition, such as drive D:, drive E: or another data partition, one of the following two methods may make it appear again.

Method 1: Run the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter

Windows 10 includes a troubleshooter that can help fix the error. It checks the device and either identifies faults or reports that everything is normal.

  • Step 1: open the Control Panel from the Start menu, or press Windows + R, type control and press Enter;
  • Step 2: type “troubleshooting” in the Control Panel search box, or find it in the list of items;
  • Step 3: when the result appears, click “View all”;
  • Step 4: run the “Hardware and Devices” troubleshooter. If it isn’t listed (newer versions of Windows 10 hide it), press Windows + R, type msdt.exe -id DeviceDiagnostic and press Enter.

Method 2: Format the problem hard disk

If nothing else works, the last resort is to format the hard disk. This creates a new file system and clears any file system errors on the drive.

However, formatting erases all the data on the hard disk. That’s why, before you start, you should recover your files from the disk so you don’t lose anything.

Solutions for a hard disk that has disappeared from Disk Management

If the hard disk has disappeared from Disk Management, or never shows up there, the two methods below may help.

Method 1: Update device drivers

Device drivers play a key role in allowing your computer to recognize the drive.

If the drivers are faulty or out of date, they can get in the way, and the hard disk drive may disappear as a result.

In this case, update the drivers to the latest version to fix the problem.

Follow these steps:

  • Step 1: type “Device Manager” in the Start menu search box and open it;
  • Step 2: find the “Disk drives” category and expand it;
  • Step 3: right-click each drive and select “Update driver”;
  • Step 4: select “Search automatically for drivers” and the update will start.

Method 2: Change the drive letter and paths

If the method above doesn’t work, the next option is to change the drive letter and paths in Disk Management. This doesn’t erase any data.

Here’s what to do:

  • Step 1: press Windows + R to open the “Run” dialog box;
  • Step 2: type diskmgmt.msc and press Enter to open Disk Management;
  • Step 3: find the missing drive in Disk Management, right-click it and select “Change Drive Letter and Paths”;
  • Step 4: click “Add” (or “Change”), choose a drive letter for the disk and click “OK”.

Conclusion

A hard disk can disappear for a number of reasons, including a faulty USB connection or a missing drive letter.

The drive may also be hidden, a Windows update or installation may be pending, or the drive itself may have failed.

To solve the problem, you can try updating the device driver or changing the drive letter and paths.

If the hard disk has disappeared from File Explorer, you can also try running the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter.

Another option is to format the hard disk, but this erases all the data saved on it.
